Writing Dialogue

Some people talk about getting "inside characters' heads" to capture conversation. I have the opposite experience--they're all inside my
head, jabbering away! After all these years of interviewing and eavesdropping on all kinds of folks, it's a sort of a zoo in there. Fragments of great lines drift through my mind at odd times: the redneck in a dark bar complaining, "I hate for the phone to ring when I'm plowin' them short rows" (approaching climax during intercourse); "take a ride inna toaster?" my two-year-old darling daughter chirps; "You gotta taste for gum drops!" Grandpa Jap declares when meeting my new fiance. Of course, these phrases all have settings, emotional contexts, and little stories twining all about them. [writing]
