Writing Releases

I prefer to call them "media releases" or "news releases", but some people just wont give up the print connotation. The Idea Lady (whose name escapes me at the moment) tells us in detail and with a sample How to write a press release. The Idea Lady comments on a publishers' newsgroup where I mostly lurk about, picking up tidbits to pass along to you. Right at the beginning of her article are links for more info on:

* Press Release Content Tips
* Tips for Press Release Formatting
* Press Release Template
* Common Press Release Errors

I'd suggest visiting and saving all the pages in a folder to have them at hand when you want to send out a release to any media. Preferably, this would be when you have actual news to announce. []

No sooner did I finish this post than I came across Jon Carroll saying: "Publicists of the world, I beg you: Every time you feel like sending out a press release, send a dollar to Doctors Without Borders instead. It'll be cheaper, and maybe some good will come of it."
