Writers' Blogs

In the current issue of the Worldwide Freelance Writer newsletter, Deanna Mascle offers seven reasons why every writer needs to blog.

1. Give your audience access
2. Attract new readers
3. Get higher search engine rank
4. Build niche reputation
5. Make money
6. Generate leads for sales
7. Get online easier/cheaper

While I find numbers five and six questionable, I must agree that:

In truth blogs are much more than a simple web diary. They are actually a content management system and/or an easy web site template. Blogging software allows you to begin posting your content to the internet in minutes and when you harness that ability with an RSS feed you have a powerful traffic magnet.

I'd add one more:

8. Great way to try out new ideas and find out how people will react.

I'm fascinated by the posts people comment on and the posts they pay no attention to. As writers, we spend far too much time alone. Blogging gives us an opportunity to practice our craft and generate conversation simultaneously.

I'm with you Elizabeth in the fascination with the commenting phenomenon. It's always surprising to me when one thread takes off, and disappointing when another doesn't garner anything at all. I don't read too much into this, however. Not everyone, among regular visitors, reads every post.

Don't think you can get much cheaper than free, and I guarantee you if I can figure out how to do do a blog it HAS to be easy. As for the money thing, I do think it has the money-earning capacity with Adsense, affiliate programs, opt-ins for address collection and follow up. It all depends on how you utilize your site. I admit I'm a bit lax on the financial end but that's changing.

About that money-making, Vikk, it takes tens of thousands of visitors to earn much through pay-per-click advertising on a website. Recently I dumped the AdSense and affiliates for this reason. Better to focus on building readership before commiting real estate to PPC ads. I'm experimenting with AdWords now, and I see over 18,000 impressions (the ad being shown) garnering only about two dozen clicks.
