Almost forgot to report that on Saturday a long-awaited (three years!) voucher finally arrived from the Microsoft Settlement. As an individual, I'll get $90 repayment for hardware purchased after July 2003. Guess my newish cordless keyboard takes care of that one. Don't suppose Bill Gates waited for these vouchers to go out before announcing (today) the release of Vista ... which doesn't appear to do anything more than my heavily armed Windows XP system. If you have a firewall, virus protection, spam blocker -- why would you need Vista anyway?

I've been running Vista's official release for about 6 weeks now, and it's much different then XP.
The OS handles just about everything differently and manages to combine the two other specialized versions of XP that I was running (tablet and MCE) into one.
The speech to text software (standard) is over 98% accurate and Vista has a built in DVR which more than rivals Tivo and without that nasty little $13 month Tivo fee.
Other things that Vista does better is handling general system resources. Unlike XP, Vista will shut off constant background services when they're not being used, allowing the computer to basically make the most out of itself.
And it looks really slick.
