It works off-line, but can also look up words in web references such as the Wikipedia encyclopedia. Thanks for the tip, Georganna. I often find myself going over to the Merriam-Webster site and then moving to thesaurus.com to look up a word. I'll check this tool out and I agree with your caution about Wikipedia.
