Joking aside, I found the PerfectBusiness - The Entrepreneur Network Events page dovetailing nicely with some notions about how to use these gatherings to further a freelance business writing career. Look up all the events you can attend. Think of them as more than networking, as mass marketing opportunities for your writing/editing services. Good advice, especially for young people who tend to enjoy the grunge look.
Rarely do I have to venture out to meet clients face to face, but when I do I break out the fancy clothes and make sure my portfolio is sparkling. You just reminded me to do one thing, however, and that is to update my business cards.

I think I was assuming that everyone knows to "suit up" in business attire--except for the shoes. I always advocate wearing comfortable shoes to these shows. You may be on your feet for hours, and the reps only see you from table-height up.
Other tips: look 'em in the eyes and smile!
