Copyright Anticircumvention
At the end of November, a three-year period of exemptions from certain aspects of the current copyright laws started. One of the areas covered is:
The exemption, which you can read about at U.S. Copyright Office - Anticircumvention Rulemaking basically allows people to monkey around with protected ebook material to break the controls as long as the use is considered noninfringement. A Cnet article mentions the application to cell phones and discs and mentions unlocking them for educational purposes. While I can't think of a legitimate reason to circumvent protection on an ebook, this turn of events makes me happy I never bothered to try to lock mine up.Literary works distributed in ebook format when all existing ebook editions of the work (including digital text editions made available by authorized entities) contain access controls that prevent the enabling either of the book’s read-aloud function or of screen readers that render the text into a specialized format.

The Incurable Disease of Writing
Hi Georganna, I have a valid reason to circumvent e-book locking.
My dad is an avid reader, with very poor eyesight these days, but still prefers to read rather than listen to a recording. I create very-large-print versions of texts he can read on a tablet PC, in locked-down and book-marked PDF form so he can't accidentally corrupt them whilst reading them.
Trouble is, if the text is only available in a locked-down e-book form to start with, I can do nothing with it. (Fortunately his main interests are historical, so Project Gutenburg is a treasure store, but it still limits new books he wants to read.)
Any help un-locking copyrighted e-books would be gratefully received, for this purpose, even if I have to pay for the copyrighted copy first.
Regards
Ian
Ian, your father's situation certainly gives one pause to ponder. I wouldn't think there would be a question about noninfringement in his case. I had the impression that breaking the eBook locks was small stuff, easily accomplished ... and you're such a clever guy!
